Learning Environments
Learning Environments are flexible, comfortable and designed to meet individualized learning styles
• Equipment, materials, space, encouragement and time are provided for students to
experience learning throughout the school.
• Classroom libraries contain an abundance of resources that are varied by genre, level
and interest.
• Real world resources are available in the classroom such as magazines and newspapers.
• Children are able to access materials without teacher support.
• Students share work spaces. They do not have designated desks or table spaces.
• Individual student materials are accessible regardless of choice in work area.
• There are well stocked activity areas in the room (publishing center, reading area, hands-on table area, computer area).
• There are spaces for whole group, small group and independent learning.
• There are flexible furnishings that can be moved for a variety of informal groupings.
• Classroom furnishing are varied and should include non-traditional items that promote a relaxed classroom environment such as lamps, soft music, chairs, bean bags, reading corners, balls, etc.
• Computer access and other electronic resources are available in the classroom for small groups and individual
work/research.
